Victor Osimhen won the 2023 African Player of the Year Award. He beat Achraf Hakimi (Morocco) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt).

The 2023 African Best Player Award event took place in Marrakesh, Morocco, Tuesday (12/12/2023) early morning WIB. Victor Osimhen was crowned the winner and became the first Nigerian player to do so after Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

Osimhen is expected to win this award after ‘carrying’ Napoli to win the Serie A title last season. He scored 26 goals in 32 appearances, making him the season’s top scorer.

For Napoli, the Scudetto is a big achievement. The last time they won was 33 years ago with maestro Diego Armando Maradona.

Nigeria completed her achievement at this awards with the success of Asisat Oshoala in the women’s category. The Barcelona women’s footballer won the title for the sixth time and extended her record.

Oshoala beat South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbra Banda. The African Footballer of the Year award is determined by a technical committee from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), plus media professionals, coaches and captains.
