After fifteen Eredivisie rounds, Santiago Giménez and Vangelis Pavlidis still have a view of Coen Dillen’s ancient Eredivisie record (43 goals). The strikers of Feyenoord and AZ respectively are ahead of the so-called Coen Dillen index, but on average they score less often.
Dillen, who died in 1990, scored 43 times for PSV in the Eredivisie in the 1956/1957 season. That is still the record. Giménez and Pavlidis have now both scored eighteen times. That’s more than Dillen did 67 years ago after 15 of 34 games. He then ‘only’ had twelve hits.
But the Coen Dillen index gives a distorted picture, because the five-time Dutch international scored much more often after the winter break (28 times in 17 games). In terms of average, Giménez and Pavlidis are currently behind Dillen.
Dillen scored an average of 1.26 goals per game in the 1956/1957 season. That amounts to 18.97 goals after fifteen rounds. The average of Giménez and Pavlidis is now 1.20 goals per match.
There is a good chance that the Eredivisie will finally get another Eredivisie top scorer with at least thirty goals with Giménez and/or Pavlidis. The last player to achieve this was Wilfried Bony on behalf of Vitesse with 31 goals in the 2012/2013 season. Last season, only nineteen goals were enough for Xavi Simons (PSV) and Anastasios Douvikas (FC Utrecht) to become shared Eredivisie top scorers.
Injuries bothered Van Nistelrooij and Van Basten
It is important for Giménez and Pavlidis to stay fit. In the past, Marco van Basten and Ruud van Nistelrooij seemed to come close to the record number of 43 goals, until their progress was halted due to physical problems.
Van Basten had scored 34 times after 22 games for Ajax in the 1985/1986 season, but was then sidelined for weeks. He missed a total of eight games and finished with ‘only’ 37 goals.
Van Nistelrooij had an extremely high average in the 1999/2000 season. After 23 rounds he had scored 29 times for PSV, but then disaster struck. Due to knee problems, the striker did not play another match that season.
