Roger Vanmeerbeek Awarded the Order of Merit by the COIB for Contribution to the Olympic Movement

The Order of Merit of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee, which rewards each year a person who has made an exceptional contribution to the Olympic Movement in our country, was awarded to Roger Vanmeerbeek, aged 88. The COIB had made and announced its choice on June 8 during its general assembly.

Roger Vanmeerbeek, brilliant in athletics, orienteering and badminton where he was crowned Belgian champion several times, had a career in the army. He became an aviation colonel.

He joined the Belgian Olympic movement in 1965. Roger Vanmeerbeek was a member of the COIB Board of Directors from 1977 to 2004.

Vanmeerbeek was chef de mission three times at the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992, Lillehammer in 1994 and Sydney in 2000. He is the father of golf coach Michel Vanmeerbeek.
