SK “Jēkabpils Lūši” volleyball players became the winners of the “Cewood” Latvian Cup, who beat the “Ezerzeme”/DU volleyball players 3-0 (25:23, 26:24, 25:20).
The first point of the game was scored by Jānis Jansons with a run, but after an attack by David Žolnerović, Daugavpils won 4:1, after another attack by him – 7:2, and after an elusive serve – 9:3. However, “Lūši” slowly reduced the difference, as Zigurds Adamović achieved a balance in attack (17:17). After two attacks by Ilyas Makarov, “Ezerzeme”/DU took the lead with 20:18, but after a half-minute break requested by March Obrumans, the Jäkabpilians scored four points in a row, finding two in the block, and after an attack by Jānis Medenis, they won the set with 25:23.
SK “Jēkabpils Lūši” volleyball players started the second set better, reaching 4:0 after Medenis attack. Daugavpils slowly got closer to the result, but when the score became 6:5 in favor of the Jēkabpilians after Medenis’ mistake, Eriks Voronko jumped on Medenis’ leg to block it, and he was forced to leave the field. After Sand Vilcāns’ “eisa”, the Daugavpils took the lead for the first time in the set with 14:13, but in the continuation of the set, none of the teams could gain more than one point.
In the third set, Ezerzeme/DU scored the first two points in the set after Dmitri Meinert’s attack, but Marat Selivanov equalized the score with attacks (2:2), but after Vilcāns scored a point in attack, “lynxes” responded with four points, after Armands Ābolin’s attack leading 6-3. In the continuation of the set, the Jēkabpilians maintained a lead of one to three points, until Armands Rokjāns achieved a draw with two effective attacks in a row (16:16). However, the “status quo” was immediately disrupted by Āboliņš, who first scored a point with an attack, and then served a “run”, making it 18:16. “Ezerzeme”/DU failed to fight back, as Adamović scored a point in the match with an attack in a difficult situation.
In the Jēkabpils team, Medenis scored 17 points, Adamovičs collected 12 points, Āboliņš and Stieľelis scored 10 points each, who realized 10 of 14 opportunities in the attack. On the other hand, lifter Jānis Jansons scored six out of nine points with uncatchable serves, two with a block, and also scored a point in the only attack.
For Daugavpils, Rokjāns scored 15 points, while Sandis Vilcāns scored 12 points, who together with Jānis Jansons were recognized as the best in their teams.
“The victory in three sets is a little surprise. The first and second sets were very tight – one ball here or there and it could have been different. The fact that we wanted to win and we could, that is clear, and 3-0 does not change the essence of the matter. The main thing is the title,” said SK “Jēkabpils Lūši” coach Marcis Obrumans after the victory on LTV7 live. “Today we served aggressively enough, although we did not do so well in reception. And the attack percentage was good enough for us. It’s not the first time we play with them, and each opponent is very well known, so there was no need to draw a special scheme before the game.”
“We have lost quite a few games in the Baltic League this season, but we did not focus on that this time. In the last two weeks, we only focused on the cup. Yesterday’s game gave us the positive charge that we can and cannot be taken with our bare hands. And we kept those emotions, the positive wave until today’s game. But 3-0 – I’m surprised myself,” Jānis Medenis, the most productive participant of the match, emphasized the emotional background of the game.
The winners in the women’s final were the volleyball players of RVS/LU, who defeated VK “Jelgava” 3-0 (25:21, 25:18, 25:9).
The winners of the “Cewood” Latvian Cup won the right to compete in the 2024/2025 European Cup competitions organized by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). in the season of 2018, if participation quotas will be granted to the Latvian Volleyball Federation (LVF).
