Tennis Takes Over Paris: The Design of Roland-Garros’ 45th Official Poster

I wanted tennis to take over Paris.”

Roland-Garros is Paris and Paris is Roland-Garros. It is with this common thread in mind that the artist Paul Rousteau embarked on the design of the 45th official poster for the Porte d’Auteuil tournament. “I wanted to represent Paris but also the very particular color of a clay court. For example, I had thought of putting the court on a wall, in a street, on a building covered with clay, with lines, or even a view from above… A city, seen from above, is normally gray and there, I had imagined that it would take on the ocher color of Roland-Garros. Then, I came up with the idea of representing the Seine” he explained at the end of his creative process.

A guiding idea which pushed the 38-year-old photographer to use artificial intelligence. “I didn’t have time to take photos during the tournament. As I had lots of ideas in mind but they were most often impossible to realize via photography, I decided to turn to artificial intelligence. For me, it was a pretext to make these impossible ideas a reality because I really wanted tennis to take over Paris.

A great first for the tournament but also for the artist, inspired throughout his career by impressionism and pointillism. After a long period of familiarization with this new tool, he repainted the image provided by the AI point by point, using a graphic palette.
