The return of Dominik Paris: triumphs on the Saslong in Val Gardena 22 years after Ghedina’s last Italian success

An unexpected, epic, sudden return: at 34 years old Dominik Paris accomplishes one of the most beautiful feats of his career, winning the downhill race World Cup of skiing in Val Gardena. On that track, the Bedroomhaunted for him and now for all of Italian skiing, where no one had ever managed to triumph downhill after the last success achieved by Christian Ghedina way back in 2001. Only Werner Hell he had won, in 2008, but in Super-G. In the queen of fast disciplines, however, Italy has been waiting for a possible heir to Paris for some time. In the meantime, the 34-year-old South Tyrolean, with an operation behind him crusaderhas shown that he can still be the best of all. The victory in Val Gardena is the 22esima in the World Cup, the first since March 2022.

Paris won by dominating from the Spinel jump to the final schuss. She knew how to tame the jumps, the long stretch of scrolling and also i Ciaslat, the four bends in rapid succession between the humps, where he had often run into difficulty. A practically perfect descent: the favourite, the Norwegian Sourcehe had to settle for second place and paid well 44 cents compared to the performance of the blue. The American closes the podium Bennett, winner of the first downhill race of the season, 6 tenths behind. The phenomenon Odermattonly seventh at the finish line on equal merit with Mattia Brokenhe took almost a second of detachment. “I felt like I was racing the skis but I had no idea what I was doing,” Paris tells Raisport. And he explains: “It was a lot thrillingI’ve been trying here for years and I finally succeeded, too bello. Today the snow was a little different, it was less hard and smoother, I tried to to do well i salt and I think I made a difference there by maintaining the speed“.

Dominik Paris is the third Italian skier more successful of history in the men’s field, behind only two legends like Alberto Tomba (50) e Gustav Thöni (24). Indeed, in downhill he is the Italian harder of all time (18 victories), although his trophy case also boasts a world gold in Super-G and a Super-G World Cup. His talent, never recognized as much as he deserved, has always expressed itself best on another Italian track, that of Bormiohe had to conquer well 7 successes. Then there were the historic triumphs (four) a Kitzbühel, in the temple of skiing. As well as a Garmischin Germany.

In Val Gardena, in his Alto AdigeParis, on the other hand, had never managed to express himself at his best (only one podium, in 2014), not even in the years d’oro that preceded the terrible injury to the crusader of January 2020. One slipped in a corner during a training session that seemed to have put an end to his high-level career. Instead, after a long rehabilitation, his right knee slowly returned. So are the victories: Garmish e Bormio in 2021, Kvitfjell in 2022. The last season however was that of calvaryof other ailments, of a Paris at times unrecognizable on those slopes that were previously eaten by his power. For the second revival he chose the best theater: Val Gardena which has been without an Italian success for too long. The last great track on which his was still missing seal. Waiting for the Bormio races to arrive too. And dreaming, who knows, of holding out until Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympicswhere men’s skiing is scheduled right on “its” slope.
