Thiem Competing in Qualifying Tournament to Secure Spot in Australian Open Main Field

Although there are 128 players in the main field, Thiem, 98th in the rankings, did not receive a starting place because various players made use of their protected rankings and places were kept free for winners of the qualifying tournament.

The Austrian would now have to compete in this and win three times in order to qualify for the main field.

The 30-year-old was already in the final Down Under in 2020, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in five sets despite leading the sets 2-1.

The right-hander won his first and only Grand Slam title that same year at the US Open, when he defeated Alexander Zverev in a hard-fought final over five sets.

Raducanu leads the women’s qualifying field

Thiem is currently preparing for the coming season in Dubai.

In the women’s field, Emma Raducanu, a former US Open winner, also leads the qualification field.
