Athlete from Tierra Amarilla and student at the Mercedes Fritis Mackenney High School managed to get Atacama back on the South American school podium and, for the first time, in the judo discipline.
Very good news for the region occurred this Thursday at the South American School Games organized by the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Institute and which are held at the Contact Sports Center of the Sports Park of the National Stadium, since the Tierramarillana judoka and student of the Liceo Bicentenario Mercedes Fritis, Isidora Alfaro García, won the bronze medal in the +64 kilos category, after defeating Nahyr Angelarcio from Paraguay and Samickay Córdova from Peru in her last fights.
Seremi del Deporte, Arling Guzmán, congratulated this result: “We are very happy for Isidora’s performance in these Games. It has been 5 years since our region achieved a medal at the South American school level, so we recognize the effort she has made to be at this level, as well as the support of her family, her club and the Mindep programs. IND that have supported the discipline of judo. With this result, Isidora can apply for the Regional Government scholarship to be part of the “Team Atacama” that financially supports the development of athletes.”
For her part, the 14-year-old athlete said after the awards ceremony: “I come from the Mercedes Fritis Mackenney High School, I got third in the South American School Games. I was hoping to get first, but third place was achieved and I’m very happy. The rivals were very strong, but you have to trust yourself.”
The South American School Games bring together more than 1,500 schoolchildren between 12 and 14 years old from Argentina, Bolivia, Bonaire, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
