Barcelona can be banned from next season’s Champions League for up to three years for violating financial fair play. This was reported by the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing a well-informed source, according to which the Catalan club’s accounting was quite chaotic. According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona will learn the amount of the penalty in February.
In July, the Spanish champion was already fined half a million euros (12 million crowns) by UEFA for violating financial fair play. The reason was erroneously reported profits from the sale of intangible assets.
Barcelona now face a much tougher penalty for breaching UEFA’s financial regulations, which require clubs to balance expenditure and income. The last three-year cycle is always evaluated.

Barcelona announced a net profit of 304 million euros (roughly 7.5 billion crowns) in September, and the threat of a penalty that had been hanging over the indebted club for a long time seemed to be banished. However, UEFA’s financial rules apply exclusively to football deals, and Barcelona’s last annual report showed revenue of hundreds of millions of euros from, for example, the sale of TV and marketing rights, as well as from other sports that do not affect UEFA’s ratings.
According to behind-the-scenes information from Welt am Sonntag, Barcelona have had a mess in their financial records and could miss out on the Champions League for two to three years. “The bigger the loss, the bigger the punishment,” the paper quoted its source as saying.
