VfB Stuttgart Advances to Quarter-finals of DFB Cup with Dominant Performance

The course of the game:

VfB started the game powerfully. After VfB’s dominant opening minutes, a fast-paced and varied game developed in which Marcel Sabitzer hit the crossbar for Dortmund in the 20th minute. Shortly afterwards, VfB had their first big chance. After a cross from the left side, Deniz Undav headed towards the near post. The former VfB player and birthday boy of the day, Gregor Kobel, in the Dortmund goal, parried for a corner (24th minute). In the final phase of the first half of the game, VfB was the team that dominated the game, but failed to use their attacks more consistently after winning the ball in the opponent’s half. Deniz Undav missed a cross shortly before the end of regular time, Atakan Karazor’s finish after strong preparatory work by Maxi Mittelstädt in stoppage time was ultimately too vague.

After the break, Serhou Guirassy had a great chance to make it 1-0. Maxi Mittelstädt won the ball, Deniz Undav passed the ball to the VfB goalscorer, who was denied by Gregor Kobel from five meters (52′). Just two minutes later, the striker from Guinea made his team and the VfB fans celebrate with his goal (54th) (see: the goals).

After the opening goal, things became turbulent. First, Enzo Millot was denied by Gregor Kobel (58th), before a goal from Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gitten was disallowed by the video referee due to an offside position (60th).

As a result, VfB was very well organized defensively and didn’t allow the opponent any more chances. The team acted efficiently offensively with the chest ring and increased the score to 2-0 in the 77th minute thanks to substitute Silas.

On the other side, Alexander Nübel was there in his usual manner and thwarted Marco Reus’ chance of scoring the next goal (81′). In stoppage time, VfB missed the chance of greater success. But this didn’t dampen the celebration after the final whistle. VfB deservedly won and is in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.
