Young Archery Prodigy Shines at Philippine Sports Competition

Faye Collantes nearly won gold medals in the archery competition of the Philippine Sports Commission’s Batang Pinoy Games right after her first competitive appearance.

He owes part of his success to his parents.

A 9-year-old girl shot dead in Naga City followed her parents’ teachings and won four gold medals Thursday at the rain-soaked Rizal Memorial baseball field for the archery competition.

“I learned the sport from my parents,” Collantes said after reaching his goal with precision and consistency to lead the 10m, 20m, 30m and general Fita events.

Faye’s father Noe and Faye’s mother were former goalkeepers who played for the Bicol region in Palarong Pambansa during their heyday.

“We are both archers, my husband and I. This is Fay’s first time competing in a high-level competition like Batang Pinoy and we are proud of her,” Fay told the Inquirer.

The youngest of the three children, Fay’s elder brother Mark Dominic, is also dead, having won several regional meets and tournaments across the country, including this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Mark Dominic, 15, also received the Siklab Youth Sports Archery Award when the organization, which awards the best Filipino youth and youth athletes in all sports, was announced earlier this month.

“I love archery and I hope to win another medal here,” said Fay, who is aiming for her fifth gold in the Olympic round after adding silver to her collection in the 15 meters.

Training in the yard

According to their mother, the Collantes brothers hone their skills at the training center next door and sometimes on the 60-foot practice field the family built in their backyard.

While Mark Dominic is already under the radar of the national archery team, Fay will not be far behind after appearing in these Games for the Philippines’ best 17-year-old athletes.

“We have never played on the international stage. It will be a great achievement for them and their family when Fey and Dominic play for our national team,” Fey said.

Meanwhile, at the Philippine National Games, high jumper Leonard Grospe set a new national record and swimmer Quendi Fernandez capped her performance with a sixth gold medal on the penultimate day of the sports festival.

Grospe twice broke the 18-year-old national standard in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.20 m to win gold. He broke the record of his coach Sean Guevara whose previous mark of 2.17 m was achieved during the 2005 National Open held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
