After Cristina Ruiz’s participation last week in the A8 Mini Women’s Championship where she won the bronze medal with the Córdoba team in a great tournament, it is Alejandro Chacón Franco’s turn in the A8 Mini Men’s Championship that will be hosted by the Malaga town of Manilva.
Alejandro is 11 years old, is in 6th grade and has been playing basketball since he was 3 years old. Like his clubmate, he also has experience in this type of appointment since both were called up by the pre-mini team in 2022 for the Benahavís championship, although at those ages basketball values prevail over competitiveness. .
Now the situation is different. With two more years and in the mini category, the teams are clearly going to compete and go as far as possible, without forgetting of course that the most important thing is to enjoy the experience.
Alejandro Chacón has been going through cuts and training with the Córdoba team for almost three months. The young settler player tells us that in October there were a couple of free call-ups with about 60 players, of which 24 remained. Then they continued making selections until they were left with the twelve selected, right on the December long weekend.
From there they began to train once a week and play friendly matches with clubs of a higher category (children’s). «The truth is that I feel very comfortable in the national team because I practically know all my teammates since we coincide in Benahavís; “We understand each other on the field and we play very much as a team.”says Alejandro.
Calendar
Luck has meant that Córdoba has to face Málaga again, perhaps the great favorite, just as happened to Cristina last week. The group is completed by Huelva and Almería, in theory more affordable rivals.
The debut will be on Friday at 5 pm with the Huelva squad; On Saturday morning (10:00 a.m.) they will face the Almeria team and in the afternoon (5:00 p.m.) the Malaga team awaits. This match could be the decisive one to play for a place in Sunday’s grand final.
Córdoba held its last training session last Sunday, where “we reviewed everything we want to do in Manilva and put it into practice with the CB El Carmen children’s A team,” he indicates.
Qualities
Alejandro’s first contact with basketball coincided with the launch of the Municipal Basketball School eight years ago. At first he played with older children because there were none of his own, until later there was a team with players of the same age.
The director of the EMB, Javi Franco, defines him as a player «very hard-working and disciplined, very smart when it comes to competing; “He does well one on one, with good shooting from outside and defensively he is intense and aggressive.”
“What I value most is their desire to progress and improve day by day,” he adds. His mini team at CB Fuente Palmera is fighting for the first places in the provincial league with the aim of getting into the play-offs for the title.
Alejandro’s most notable achievements have been last season’s preferred provincial championship in the first year of the mini category and the victory in the Portimao Tournament (Portugal).
Finally, Alejandro Chacón points out that he is receiving the support of his club mates “who encourage me to do well and not get nervous; my family and other members of the club will accompany me to Manilva where We hope to leave the name of Córdoba and Fuente Palmera very high«.
