Ángela Ruíz could not have had a more difficult opponent in the World Cup Final in Colombia: the South Korean Lim Sihyeon. In the recurve bow modality, the 16-year-old Mexican faced a world champion opponent and quickly took the lead with a 4-0 that seemed to completely put the game on track. However, Ruiz showed great mettle to tie the score and force the gold medal to be decided in the so-called “golden arrow.”

Sihyeon’s precision is overwhelming for any rival and no wonder: South Korea is the leading power in this sport (at the Tokyo Olympics they led the medal table with four golds). And this was clear from the start, as the Asian woman shot a 10 which gave her total confidence. Ruiz responded with a nine that showed a bit of a detour. There was no remedy in that first set. It was all tens for Sihyeon, but Angela retired with a perfect shot on her third attempt.

Each set awarded two points. That is, at that moment, the South Korean was winning 2-0. Then, in the second, the road became complicated for the Mexican. Ruiz threw two eights in which she showed her displeasure. While Sihyeon threw two tens and a nine, to take another two points and make the score 4-0. The third set was frustrating for the Mexican, as she made her best record so far (two tens and a nine), but Lim had the same numbers and the points were divided (they were 5-1). But at that moment, the most complicated of the game, the young woman from Saltillo, came from behind to stage a memorable comeback.

Ruiz only joined the Senior National Team in April, but his abilities are worthy of someone who has spent a lifetime in competition. He started the third set with a ten, which would be key. His rival reached a ten and two nines, against Angela’s other ten and one more nine. He took the set and was back. In the last one, which would define the Korean victory or the draw to force the “golden arrow”, Ángela Ruiz obtained two tens and a nine to overcome Sihyeon’s two nines and a ten. His second shot was reviewed. He had initially scored eight, but was awarded a 9 by checking the exact placement of the arrow.

In the “golden arrow”, Sihyeon rolled a nine. Angela couldn’t improve that shot, because she shot an eight and took the silver medal. However, the feeling is positive. This is her second world medal in two months: last April, together with Alejandra Valencia and Aída Román, she won gold in Turkey, beating the South Korean women’s team.. The dream is there: fight for a medal in Paris 2024. Age is not a limit and that was clear in London 2012 when Mariana Avitia won a bronze at the age of 18 and in her debut.

“There can be another case where a Mexican archer reaches the Olympics at a young age, so many things can happen the following year. Archery is a sport that requires discipline and where you can improve in other areas of your life, and finally that helped me get more in order in terms of school, in terms of training, following a routine, ultimately it is vital to improve and remain consistent in this sport,” Ruiz told La Afificación.

Archery has become a sport of great joy for Mexico, in addition to guaranteeing emotions due to the inherent drama that accompanies it. In London 2012, Mariana Avitia and Aída Román won bronze and silver individually. While in Tokyo 2020, Alejandra Valencia and Luis “Abuelo” Álvarez won bronze in mixed teams. With Ángela Ruiz a new light of hope has been lit.
