A Rookie Quarterback’s Journey: CJ Stroud’s Path to the Playoffs

Quarterback CJ Stroud will play in his first playoff game of his rookie campaign when the Houston Texans face the Cleveland Browns at NRG Stadium.

The Ohio State graduate has had a difficult path to reach the elite of the NFL. Stroud was raised by his mother as his father, Coleridge Bernanrd Stroud III, was arrested in 2015 for carjacking, kidnapping, robbery, evading an officer with reckless driving and misdemeanor sexual assault. For this reason, the father of the Texans quarterback was sentenced to 38 years in prison.

Stroud Sr. is eligible for parole until 2040, when he will be 74 years old. He is being held at Folsom State Prison in California.

The 22-year-old quarterback has had an exceptional rookie season and is aiming to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. During the regular season he accumulated 4,108 yards with 23 touchdown passes and five interceptions while completing 63.9 percent of his throws.

Stroud has criticized the American justice system

After the Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Stroud criticized the American justice system and assured that he does so not only because of his father’s situation but because of everything it encompasses such as the loss of human rights.

“I didn’t want to make this public, but our justice system is not right, it’s something I need to be more vocal about, because it’s not right,” Stroud said. “It’s not just my dad’s situation, it’s the entire corrupt judicial system, in some prisons in Mississippi they have rats and cockroaches.”
