After the Austrian Nina Ortlieb, Vlhova is the next top rider to fall victim to the devil of injuries. In the men’s race, Marco Schwarz, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (NOR) and Alexis Pinturault (FRA), among others, had to end the season after falls and injuries.

“She’s definitely not in a good moment, she’s under medication. But she is already looking ahead. She knows very well that she is not the first and will not be the last with such an injury,” said Vlhova’s coach Mauro Pini. “The whole team is already focused on the future.” After three victories this season in the slalom, Vlhova was considered Mikaela Shiffrin’s toughest competitor, and in the overall World Cup she was also in second place behind Shiffrin (1,109) with 802 points.

Fall of Vlhova

For Petra Vlhova, her home race in Jasna came to a painful end after just a few goals.

“Will miss them”

“It’s a big loss,” Shiffrin said of her rival. The American is now the sole favorite in the slalom on Sunday (9.30 a.m./12.15 p.m., live on ORF1). Before Vlhova’s cancellation, around 15,000 fans were expected. “I’m looking forward to the slalom and this wonderful atmosphere, but we will miss her at the start,” said Shiffrin.

Vlhova, who celebrated a celebrated home win in Jasna in 2021, slipped on the inside ski and into the net in the upper part of the giant slalom on Saturday after around ten goals. The 28-year-old, whose right ski got caught in the safety barrier, was unable to free herself from her predicament or ski down into the valley herself. After being transported away with the Akja, Vlhova finally received the shocking diagnosis in the hospital.
