Candra Wijaya thought about resigning when the Decree (SK) of the 2024 Paris Olympic Ad Hoc Team was published on December 7. However, recently the gold medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics with Tony Gunawan changed his mind.
PBSI is known to have announced the composition of the Ad Hoc team that will be tasked with qualifying badminton athletes for the Olympics from July 26 to August 11 2024.
The parent national badminton organization also collaborates with a number of legends, especially those who have won gold medals at the most prestigious multi-event every four years.
Such as Greysia Polii (Tokyo 2020), Susy Susanti (Barcelona, 1992), Taufik Hidayat (Athens, 2004), Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad (Rio, 2016), and Candra Wijaya. They act as mentors in sectors according to their number of specializations.
But who would have thought, Candra actually intended to resign from managing the Ad Hoc team. This was expressed by Candra, during the announcement of the Ad Hoc team by PBSI, on Monday (8/1/2024).
“At the time of the Decree (SK) on December 7, I was already thinking about you resigning. But as I said earlier, the appointment of a mentor is an appreciation and honor for us,” said Candra.
Candra’s determination is no joke in helping Indonesian badminton to be able to send as many athletes as possible. Moreover, it is currently not said to be safe for men’s doubles to send two representatives.
Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto are currently in eighth place, following Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri (10), Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin (12), Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan (13).
“My principle is that I don’t want to hurt the spirit of my younger siblings and friends who are fighting in the Olympics. This is an honor and spirit for all of us in making the Olympics a success,” said Candra.
“I have coordinated and participated in training several times on 23 (December). I want to move quickly and really optimally,” he stressed.
