Arcega-Whiteside from Zaragoza becomes the first Spanish player in the Canadian Soccer League

José Joaquín Arcega-Whiteside has become the first Spanish player in the Canadian Football League (CFL) when his signing for the Toronto Argonauts team was announced this Monday.

Arcega-Whiteside, who was born in Zaragoza in 1996 – son of former Spanish basketball player Joaquín Arcegabrother of Fernando and José Ángel – and played with Stanford University (USA) in the United States university football league, joins the Toronto team after being part of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL (2019-2021), Seattle Seahawks (2022) y Atlanta Falcons (2023).

The Spaniard, who also has American nationality, plays the wide receiver position.

The Argonauts, one of the oldest professional sports teams in North America and which was founded in 1873, have the most titles in the CFL.

He Toronto team has won the Gray Cup 18 times, the trophy awarded to the winner of the Canadian professional soccer league. The last time was in 2022.

Canadian soccer is similar to American soccer but is played on a field that is wider and longer than that in the United States.

Additionally, CFL games are played with 12 players per team (11 in NFL) and the lowest score allowed in Canadian football is one point while in American football it is two.
