Becker Mourns the Loss of Beckenbauer, ‘Germany’s Great Man’

“Franz is over 20 years older and has experienced things that also happened to me,” said Becker. He was always able to exchange ideas on an equal footing with Beckenbauer, whose death on Sunday at the age of 78 caused great sadness beyond the sport.

“In this respect, I really valued him personally, liked him very much and had close contact with him until recently, when he was still doing quite well,” said Becker.

Beckenbauer belonged to his “closer circle of friends” and the news of the death was a “huge shock” for Becker and his family. “Germany has lost a very great man,” the tennis idol concluded.
