Charles Michel Reverses Decision to Run in European Elections

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has reversed his previously announced decision: he will no longer stand as a candidate in this summer’s European elections and will maintain his mandate until the end of November next year.

On his Facebook page, Michel announced: “I will dedicate all my efforts to my current responsibilities with firm determination until its end. I will always be a fervent defender of a democratic, strong, united Europe that controls its destiny. At the end of this mandate, I will reflect on the nature and direction of my future commitments,” wrote the President of the European Council.

Charles Michel remembers that he wanted to run for the European Parliament to “continue serving” his country, as well as to “promote and defend the European project.”

Although he guarantees that the possible campaign will be compatible with the final phase of the mandate, he regretted the “extreme reactions”, the “criticism” and the “personal attacks” of which he was the object and which “take more and more emphasis on factual arguments. .

On 6 January, Charles Michel announced that he would head the French-speaking liberal party MR’s list for the European elections in June, with a view to being able to hold a European position (as an MEP or otherwise) in the next elections. institutional cycle.

If he wanted to participate in the European Championship, the liberal politician would have to leave office earlier than planned, on July 16 instead of the planned November 30, a decision that he is now reversing.

This announcement comes a few days before an extraordinary and crucial European summit, on Thursday in Brussels, for the EU to advance its financial support for Ukraine and marked by the Hungarian blockade, which calls into question the unanimity of the European Council.
