It was -19 degrees Celsius at kickoff of the Chiefs-Dolphins game Saturday night. Officially, it was the fourth coldest game in NFL history.
Needless to say, sitting for four hours in these conditions is not really advisable.
Yet that’s what we do, the supporters of both teams. And for some, this had some pretty terrible consequences. According to KMBC 9 (via Pro FootballTalk), fifteen people had to be taken to the hospital from Arrowhead Stadium.
Among the unfortunates, there were seven cases of hypothermia and three of frostbite.
70,000 people at -19 degrees
In total, local firefighters reportedly received 69 calls from the stadium, half of which concerned cases of hypothermia. These figures do not include people who went to the emergency room themselves.
70,000 people made the trip despite the feeling being as low as -30 degrees.
Apparently, when you love, you don’t count… your toes.
