Congo and Guinea in the quarter-finals – Egypt out

Congo and Guinea have reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup, where they will now meet. Congo beat record winners Egypt 8-7 in a penalty shootout on Sunday evening after the score was 1-1 after regular time and extra time. The West Africans had previously beaten Equatorial Guinea 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mohamed Bayo in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Meschack Elia (37th) brought Congo forward, Mostafa Mohamed equalized for the North Africans, who were playing without their injured star Mohamed Salah, with a penalty (45th+1) shortly before the half-time whistle. The second half was goalless, Egypt’s Mohamed Hamdi saw yellow-red in extra time (97′). For the seven-time champion, goalkeeper Gabaski as his team’s ninth shooter failed in the decision, while Lionel Mpasi then scored.

Guinea played in the majority for almost the entire second half after Federico Bikoro was shown the red card for a serious foul (55th). Equatorial Guinea still had the chance from the penalty spot, but Emilio Nsue, who has already been successful five times in the tournament, only hit metal (68th).
