Controversy Surrounding the Bomb Victims Memorial in Dresden

Dresden – For days, the town hall didn’t know how the inscription on the bomb victims memorial on the Altmarkt came about. Mayor Dirk Hilbert (52, FDP) was also clueless. In view of the communication breakdown, right-wing circles were already speculating about a “desecration”.

It has now become known that the contractually agreed removal with “Flex” was carried out on behalf of the owner of the adjacent underground car park.

However, without informing the top management in advance about the exact time (January 9th/10th).

Construction mayor Stephan Kühn (43, Green) and cultural mayor Annekatrin Klepsch (46, left) explained this at the memorial on Friday.

“There was no communication here. We were only informed about the media coverage,” said Kühn.

“That was also a mistake on our part. We stand by it.” There should be no personal consequences. Kühn continues: “I don’t see the monument being destroyed. The base plate as a central element will remain intact.”

There has been an effort to remove the text above the bench for a long time.

Damage and graffiti had repeatedly led to high costs for their removal.

As a result, according to the town hall, resolutions were made with the owner of the underground car park, the city council and the “February 13th” working group to redesign the memorial.

A new stele has been standing at the memorial since Friday.

This should now take over the complete explanation of the memorial. The old metal pillar from 2020 was damaged by a construction vehicle in October 2023 (during the renovation of the old market) and was no longer erected.

“We used the replacement procurement as an opportunity to make corrections to the text, especially regarding the number of victims and the time of the corpses being burned in February 1945,” added Mayor of Culture Klepsch.
