Cuban Judokas Preparing for Paris 2024 Olympics in Europe

Paris, January 31 – The main Cuban judokas are training in France and the men in Hungary in order to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, said today the president of the island’s federation, Rafael Manso .

During an interview with Prensa Latina in this capital, the leader clarified that the current European preparation and tour concerns athletes located in the area of ​​possible Olympic qualification, with the first fiery event in a few days: the Grand Slam of Paris, scheduled for February 2 to 4 with a record number of competitors, 670 from 111 countries.

The women’s team includes four-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion Idalys Ortiz (over 78 kg), who by sporting strategy will not participate in next weekend’s Grand Slam, the experienced Maylin del Toro (63 kg) and the promising Idelannis Gómez (70kg, 21 years old) and Lianet Cardona (78kg, 19 years old).

For its part, the men’s team brings together the world champion over 100 kilograms from Tashkent-2022, Andy Granda, the silver medalist from Baku-2018 Ivan Silva (90kg), Magdiel Estrada (73kg), Orlando Polanco ( 66kg) and the 20-year-old judoka Jonathan Charón (60kg).

We would like to thank the Cuba Cooperation France association (CubaCoop), the city of Vitry-sur-Seine and the Cuban ambassador in Paris Otto Vaillant for the welcome and support in France of the women’s selection, underlined Manso.

CubaCoop is implementing a project, with the support of around twenty French cities, to support the preparation of Cuban Olympic and Paralympic athletes for the Paris 2024 games.

The president of the Cuban Judo Federation announced that the European stay will be intense for the delegation, with participation, in addition to the Paris Grand Slam, in the tournaments of Baku, Azerbaijan (February 16-18), Linz, Austria, (March 8-10), Tbilisi, Georgia, (March 22-24) and Antalya, Turkey (March 29-31).
