Dani Olmo is expected to make his second appearance after a long break on Saturday evening at RB Leipzig against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (January 20th at 6:30 p.m.). He spoke to the Bild newspaper about his return and the gap to the front runner.
Olmo thought about continuing to play, doctors lowered their thumbs
His shoulder injury caught him off guard, says Olmo. Because he didn’t immediately recognize her as one. “I had no pain and just noticed that something was wrong,” says the Spaniard.
He would have preferred to continue playing, but the doctors gave the signal for substitution. “All three ligaments were torn and the bone was sticking out,” said Olmo. It wasn’t possible to continue playing because he couldn’t move his arm anymore. “And then came the pain.”
First operation of my career
He is used to painful pauses. Usually it’s a muscle, or worse: his knee. Since moving to RB Leipzig, he has already missed 61 competitive games, including appearances for the national team. But the break was a new experience. The 25-year-old had never had an operation before in his entire career.
Judo lessons with the team doctor’s wife
Because the nature of the injury meant he was still able to complete fitness training such as runs and start individual training early, it is now at least easier for him to increase the load. “I hardly lost any fitness,” says Olmo.
Such unfortunate injuries cannot be prevented. “In the end it’s always about learning something from it.” He managed this with the wife of a team doctor, who supported him with her judo experience. “She showed me how to fall and roll so as not to strain the affected area.”
Clear game idea, unconditional loyalty: Olmo over Alonso
So he can now play again and did a remarkably good job against Eintracht Frankfurt (0-1). And could start against Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. Olmo is warned about his compatriot Xabi Alonso’s team. “He was an incredibly good player, now he has a very clear idea for the game. And the team follows him unconditionally,” he says.
Champions Bayern or Bayer 04?
In the top game, RB can reduce the gap to the leaders to nine points and would thus inflict Leverkusen’s first defeat ever. In terms of personnel, Leipzig is a team that could have been higher up, says Olmo.
If in the end it’s not enough to seriously attack the top this season, it doesn’t matter to him whether Bayer Leverkusen, FC Bayern Munich or another team wins the race. “If so, then I would only wish it for us. I don’t care about anything else.”
