Due to the winter weather conditions, the Bundesliga match between 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Union Berlin (Friday, January 19th, 8:30 p.m.) cannot take place.
The stadium operator of the Mainz Arena has closed the venue. The reason for this is the heavy ice formation on the lower tiers, especially in the standing area, as well as on the arrival routes and the associated safety risks for spectators. A new game date will be announced soon.
This was the second loss of the season for Union
This is the second away game for the Berlin team that has been canceled due to weather this season. The Köpenick team’s game against record champions FC Bayern Munich was canceled at the beginning of December last year due to the severe onset of winter in the Bavarian capital. It will be rescheduled next week on January 24th (8:30 p.m.), which means that this week will no longer be an alternative date for the game in Mainz.
Unlike before the game in Munich, the Berlin team had not yet traveled to the away game, but was still in Berlin, as the club confirmed.
