Esplanade des Invalides: Host of 2024 Paris Olympics Events

A vast green space, located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, the Esplanade des Invalides is located opposite the majestic Hôtel des Invalides. Right in the center of Paris, it has become a privileged place of leisure where Parisians and tourists stroll and indulge in sport, music and walks. In 2024, the site is expected to accommodate up to 8,000 people for the Olympic Games events that will take place there. On the program: archery, marathon and cycling.

Start of the cycling time trial, finish of the marathons

The individual and team events (women and men) in archery will be organized from July 25 to August 4, followed by those in para archery from August 29 to September 5. The north-south orientation of the Esplanade, bordered by rows of trees on its west and east sides, will contribute to the spectacle. Same thing for the individual cycling time trials (women/men) on July 27, the starts of which will be given on the Esplanade (the finish takes place right next door at the Alexandre III bridge), before the athletes and para-athletes finish their marathons there, on August 10 and September 8, after a course paying tribute to the history of France.

The Hôtel des Invalides, built under Louis XIV in 1687 as a military hospital and retirement home for war veterans, is today a museum and monument referring to French military history, and also housing the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte .

Opposite it, the elegant Alexandre III bridge, from which the various triathlon events will start, connects it to the Grand Palais on the right bank of the Seine.

The Esplanade is located 12 km south of the Olympic and Paralympic Village and is widely served by public transport by the “Invalides” station (RER C, Metro 8, Metro 13).

The official website of the competition specifies that “ access conditions by public transport to competition sites in the heart of Paris will be unusual during the Games. In particular, the “Champs Élysées Clemenceau”, “Concorde” and “Tuileries” metro stations will be closed. Spectators are recommended to allow sufficient travel time and to arrive at the competition site in advance. »

The installation of the Olympic Games will be temporary and the monument will return to its functions once the Olympic deadline is over.
