In an interview, Germany’s captain Johannes Golla talks about the gap to the world’s best, moments that drive him to despair – and why he still hopes for success that will make the handball team sexy again.

Mr. Golla, Germany came fourth at the home World Cup in 2019. What images do you have in your mind?

I can remember well. Back then, as a 21-year-old, I was in the 35-man squad and was on the way to playing an international match at some point. That’s why I became even more interested in what was happening in Germany. I remember that there was a huge sense of euphoria right from the start. The team radiated enthusiasm all the way to us in Flensburg, which was returned from the stands in the arenas.
