Footballer Anwar El Ghazi and his former club FSV Mainz 05 from Germany failed to reach a settlement in the dispute over his dismissal at a mediation hearing on Wednesday. The parties will face each other in court again on June 19.

The 28-year-old attacker was fired from the Bundesliga club in November last year after he spoke out on social media about the war between Hamas and Israel.

El Ghazi then wrote “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. That is a slogan used by Hamas, among others. A majority in the House of Representatives has described the slogan as a call for violence.

According to his lawyer, El Ghazi will lose out on 150,000 euros per month due to the immediate dismissal. Mainz says that it wants more than half a million euros from the footballer for the violations he allegedly committed.

Correspondent Charlotte Waaijers talked about Anwar El Ghazi’s situation at Mainz in the Studio Voetbal broadcast on November 5:

Why was El Ghazi fired? ‘It is a very sensitive issue in Germany’
