The Champ-Fleuri regional Dojo welcomed, this Tuesday, January 9, elected officials and partners, on the occasion of the presence on our island of the French men’s judo team. It was Gilles Hubert, Vice-President, who represented the President of the Department of La Réunion, Cyrille Melchior. The latter recalled the Department’s commitment alongside Reunion and French athletes in the context of the future Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
From January 3 to 14, the Judo League and CREPS are welcoming the French men’s Judo team as part of the launch of its preparation for the Olympic Games which will take place from July 26 to August 11 in Paris. .
The team manager, Baptiste Leroy, accompanies a delegation of 15 high-level athletes. Ideal training conditions, a heat that actually brings to mind the temperatures of July in France.
Their training program includes two training sessions per day behind closed doors. The latter fight freely against judokas from Reunion but also from Mauritius and Madagascar. Among the French team, three judokas already selected for the Olympics: Luka Mkheidze (-60 kg), Walide Khyar (- 66 kg) and Alpha Oumar Djalo (-81 kg).
A real opportunity for our athletes and those from the Indian Ocean who compete against the judo elite. The choice of Reunion represents a reward for the Community which had presented a file to the national sports authorities to make our island a place of preparation and training.
It is in fact the Department of Reunion which enabled our territory in 2020 to obtain the “Reunion, Land of Games 2024” label. Recognition of the Community’s commitment to its proactive policy of promoting the practice of sport.
“Reunion has all the assets to promote French excellence. We are proud to support the sports movement. It is our modest contribution to the great epic that awaits all French athletes in a few months at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris,” said the Vice-President of the Departmental Council.
As a reminder, Reunion Island will also host the Olympic Flame in June 2024.
