Salzburg – The football world mourns Franz Beckenbauer. One of the greatest German footballers has died at the age of 78. Initially, nothing was known about the cause of death of the Munich native.

Franz Beckenbauer was blind in one eye

Due to his isolated life, nothing precise was known about Franz Beckenbauer’s health in the last few years before his death. In 2019 he said the Colorfulthat he had suffered an eye attack. As a result, the 1974 world champion could no longer see anything in his right eye.

He also revealed to the tabloid magazine that he had to be careful “with his heart.” Beckenbauer had to undergo two heart operations. After a routine examination by a cardiologist, whom he visited after hearing about the emergency operation of his companion Günter Netzer, an operation was also unavoidable for the 1990 world champion coach. The doctor told Beckenbauer that he only had six months to live if he did not undergo surgery, as the FC Bayern icon revealed in the 2019 interview.

The death of his son Stephan in 2015 and the corruption allegations during the 2006 World Cup also caused “the emperor” additional problems. The former libero only rarely appeared in public.

His last documented visit to the stadium for a Bundesliga game took place in August 2022. Beckenbauer was a guest in Sinsheim at the meeting between TSG Hoffenheim and FC Bayern. In the recently released ARD documentary about Franz Beckenbauer, his brother Walter already emphasized that his famous brother’s health is poor: “He’s not doing well. It’s a constant up and down.”

Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt talks about Franz Beckenbauer’s illness

Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt went into a little more detail in the Bayern 1 podcast “Blue Couch”. “I knew he was sick. I looked after him until a year ago, but then it didn’t work anymore. I saw the first signs a long, long time ago. “Still hoping that it won’t get serious,” explained the long-time team doctor for FC Bayern and the German national team. Müller-Wohlfahrt further explained Beckenbauer’s exact illness: “It’s Parkinson’s. The first signs were apparent early on, but I didn’t want to admit it myself. My Franz Beckenbauer is not allowed to get sick. This is a radiant personality.” (jsk)
