Handball European Championship: Germany second in the group after defeat against France

Germany lost the last preliminary round game of the European Handball Championship against France 30:33 (15:17). This means that national coach Alfred Gíslason’s team is now second in Group A.

The Germans played with great motivation in a tight game until the end – they were always briefly in the lead. But towards the end the French lead grew larger and larger.

The best German thrower in Berlin was Juri Knorr with eight goals. For the French, Mahé scored most often before Kentin, namely five times.

Next opponent: Iceland

The safe entry into the main round was already certain after the last game against North Macedonia. The game against France is Germany’s first defeat at the home European Championship. The team won both of their previous games.

The next opponent will be Iceland in Cologne on Thursday. In addition, the selection of the German Handball Association will face Croatia and Hungary in the main round.

At the same time as the game between Germany and France, Croatia won against Romania 31:25 (16:12) and secured first place in Group B. Austria knocked the vice-European champions Spain out of the tournament early and is therefore second in the group.

After their win against Iceland, the Hungarians are in first place in Group C. Iceland is second.

The European Handball Championships will take place in Germany from January 10th to 28th. The venues are Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne, Mannheim and Munich.
