“It’s one of my worst ‘Grand Slam’ matches”

MADRID, 26 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, world number one, has acknowledged that the “mediocre” quarterfinal match of the Australian Open, in which he lost this Friday to the Italian Jannik Sinner (6-1, 6-2, 6 -7(6), 6-3), has been “one of the worst” of his ‘Grand Slam’ career, and has explained that he has not been “up to par” this year in Melbourne.

“I was surprised by my level, in a bad way (…) It is one of the worst ‘Grand Slam’ matches I have played, at least that I remember. It is not a very pleasant feeling to have played in this way, but I give it All credit to Sinner, he has done everything better than me in all aspects of the game,” he said in the post-match press conference.

In this sense, the Balkan confessed that at no time during the tournament did he feel “close” to his best level. “Maybe in the game against Mannarino, but most of the games I didn’t play up to the standard or the way I normally play here in Australia,” he noted.

“My level today surprised me because I thought it wouldn’t be that bad in the first two sets. I didn’t really feel myself on court during this tournament. You can say that the semi-finals are a great result, but I always hope for the best from me and this wasn’t there today,” he continued, describing his performance this Friday as “mediocre.”

On the other hand, Djokovic regretted the fact that he had not been able to break his rival’s serve even once – he won the third set in the tie-break. “That statistic says a lot. He was serving with great precision,” he said, before talking about the transalpine. “He was always very calm, very serene on the court. Darren Cahill, who is a coach with a lot of experience and who has worked with former world number ones, is a great help from a mental point of view,” he concluded.
