Jannik Sinner continues to dominate the Australian Open and impressively defeated Sebastian Baez (ATP 29). Now he will face Russian Karen Khachanov in the round of 16.

After Jannik Sinner didn’t have to fend off a single breakball against Jesper De Jong in the second round, Sinner thwarted all four against Sebastian Baez and deservedly prevailed after an hour and 52 minutes. “I played really well and feel great here,” Sinner said in his on-pitch interview.

“Right now I have confidence. I also like today’s conditions because there was no wind and no sun. So it was a little easier for me to get used to it. “I also made the right decisions and took advantage of all the opportunities I had,” added the fourth in the world rankings at the press conference.

“At the moment I have self-confidence.” Jannik Sinner

The 22-year-old is in top form for his first tournament in 2024, despite starting his preparation for the season late. This only began after he led Italy to the Davis Cup title. “It’s a little different than usual, but we worked hard in preparation. I’m very happy with how I feel at the moment.”

Karen Khachanov is waiting in the round of 16

In the round of 16, Sinner will now face the Russian Karen Khachanov, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year. “It will be a tough match. “He’s always very strong at Slams and every time we’ve faced each other it’s been long matches,” explained Sinner.

“We have a similar playing style and like to play in rhythm. Physically we are also players who move well and cover the pitch. But he has improved a lot. It will be a complicated match. From round to round the level will increase and it will become more and more difficult,” analyzed the Sesto native.
