Japanese and Uzbek Dominate Judo Grand Prix in Portugal: Highlights of the 2024 Tournament

The Judo Grand Prix in Portugal is the first international judo tournament of 2024. In Odivelas, the best judoka will demonstrate their skills and fight for victory.

In the weight class up to 48 kilograms it was Japan against Japan – two junior world champions. Hikari Yoshioka defeated Kano Miyaki with a waza-ari in the golden score. Your first Grand Prix medal – gold! Almaz Alsenov, managing director of Harvest Group, a partner of the International Judo Federation (IJF), presented the medals.

Gold for Japanese Hikari Yoshioka and Uzbek Dilshodbek Baratov

In the men’s up to 60 kilograms, the Uzbek Dilshodbek Baratov won the gold medal after a skillful waza-ari. He received his medal from Mr. Mohammed Meridja, Director of Training and Coaching at IJF.

“I won my first competition in 2024 and that’s a great start for this year’s road to the Olympic Games,” said Dilshodbek Baratov after his tournament success.

Gold for Usbekin Diyora Keldiyorova and Weltmeister Yago Abuladze

In the women’s 52-kilogram final, Uzbekistan’s Diyora Keldiyorova achieved a stunning victory. She won the gold medal in the first 30 seconds. With an impressive transformation into a Juji Gatame, she forced her opponent to submit.

The performance earned her the first Grand Prix victory of the year, which will complete her medal collection, presented by Armen Bagdasarov, the chief refereeing director of the International Judo Federation.

“I would really like to stay in Portugal,” said the young woman after the award ceremony. “I came from cold sub-zero temperatures and now it’s over 20 degrees.” She is doing very well in Protugal, says Diyora Keldiyorova.

In the men’s 66kg final, former world champion Yago Abuladze won the gold medal. The Russian competes as a country-neutral individual athlete. After an exciting fight, Abuladze managed a spectacular change of direction, a waza-ari in the golden score and victory. He received his medal from Nicolas Messner, Director of Media and Judo for Peace at the IJF.

Gold for Huhu Mimi from Korea

In the women’s up to 57 kilograms, Huh Mimi showed her excellent judo skills and achieved a waza-ari, which she finished with a hold – waza-ari-awasete-ippon. A great start to the new year.

The gold medal was presented by Giuseppe Maddaloni, referee chairman at the International Judo Federation and Olympic champion.

The local Portuguese judoka demonstrated incredible techniques – an inspiring sight for all fans in the arena in Odivelas – a city that showcases the beauty, history and diversity of Portugal.
