Jerod Mayo Named New England Patriots Head Coach

According to the ESPN network, Jerod Mayo will be the new head coach of the New England Patriots.

He will therefore take over from Bill Belichick who announced Thursday that he would not return to the helm of the team after a stay of 24 seasons with the team.

Still according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Patriots should confirm everything during a press conference next week.

Mayo, 37, will become the youngest head coach in the NFL

The Patriots were able to forgo the usual NFL hiring practice and immediately name Mayo because of a succession clause in his contract extension signed last offseason.

Mayo joined the Patriots coaching staff in 2019 as the inside linebackers coach. He spent his entire eight-year playing career with New England, winning Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. Mayo was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008 and a first-team all-star in 2010. He was also a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
