Mexican Pacific League Playoffs Kick Off with Venados de Mazatlán vs. Charros de Jalisco Showdown

MAZATLAN._ The duel between Sinaloa and Jalisco will take place starting this January 1 at the Teodoro Mariscal stadium.

With a great closing of a regular role, linking three series wins, Venados de Mazatlán sealed its pass to the playoffs and opening January 2024 it hosts Charros de Jalisco, in the 2023-2024 season of the Mexican Pacific League.

The first two postseason games will be this January 1 and 2 at the Teodoro Mariscal, at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively.

The rivalry between Venados and Charros has grown since the moment Charros (formerly Algodoneros) moved to Jalisco and in recent campaigns they have seen each other in the inaugural games.

This new chapter that begins this Monday, January 1, will pit the fourth in the general points table, Mazatlán (14) against the fifth place Charros (14), being the dominance of the Buenos Aires team that placed them at the top in the final standings.

On paper it is the most even series as they face each other fourth and fifth overall, although in the matches on the normal calendar, the advantage was Venados 9-2.

The reds from the port took nine wins out of a possible 11, the only victories for the people from Guadalajara came in the first round on October 17 and 19, 2023.

The only precedent between both clubs in the January festivities dates back to the 2018-2019 edition, when in that semifinal Jalisco eliminated Mazatlán in the series 4-1.

Without a doubt it will be a clash of Charros’ hitting against the pitching of Venados, who finished as the second best in that department in the league.

The home manager, Luis Carlos Rivera, managed to put his team in third position in the second round with a record of 19-14 for an overall record of 36-32.

The pitchers tentatively scheduled by the Mazatlan ninth for the first two playoffs are Braulio Torres-Pérez (5-3, 2.66) and Manuel Flores (4-2, 2.44). Torres-Pérez won a game in the role against the Jalisco team.

Reliever Érick Casillas looked effective against his countrymen by also winning a couple of victories. The league’s saves leader for the second year in a row, Colombian Elkin Alcalá saved five games.

The troops of Benjamín Gil, who lifted this club since his arrival, would send Alemao Hernández (6-3, 3.47) and Luis Iván Rodríguez (3-5, 3.50) to the hill.

The Buenos Aires offensive closed the role with “hot” players with the wood, such as José Alonso Gaitán, Jesús “Cacao” Valdez, Niko Vásquez and Ramiro Peña, among others.
