Moncton Fisher Cats Revert Back to Original Name: The Moncton Mets

After an experience that spanned eight seasons, the Moncton Fisher Cats are no more. The team’s management decided to reconnect with tradition and take back the original name, the Moncton Mets.

“The guys started talking about it around the team this season and we think it’s a good idea,” said coach and team manager for the past year, Darrell Christie.

“The name is also better known in the community. For many, when they think of senior baseball in Moncton, they first think of the Mets and all their good years.”

As if it were worth remembering, it was with the Moncton Mets that the late Rhéal Cormier, of Saint-André-LeBlanc, played before and after his prolific career in the Major Leagues.

The team will now play in white jerseys, with orange and black at home, and on the road, black jerseys with orange and white details.

Positive numbers

What will remain of the Fisher Cats?

“The team has had success in its short history,” recalls Christie. We won a few championships (2017 and 2019). It was a good team and people liked it. But I think the community prefers the old Mets banner more.”

The coaching staff should remain in place, Christie announced.

California import receiver and player John Haimowitz also signed a deal for the 2024 season earlier this week.

“He was fantastic behind the plate in his first season with us. The players really liked him in the locker room and in the bullpen. It really helped the chemistry in the team.”

Haimowitz was selected to the league’s all-star team at the end of the campaign.

“We have about ten players returning and we hope to see a few more come up from the junior team (Mudcats). There are 5 or 6 players who will be of senior age. We want to rejuvenate the team.”

Pressed on the issue, Christie explains that management is looking for ways to give itself a better French-speaking presence on social media, which remains almost zero until now.

Acadian pitcher and shortstop Justin Cormier has lived the entire history of the Fisher Cats from the inside.

“I started my senior baseball career as an affiliate player with the Mets in 2010, so for me it’s like coming home after a big trip,” explains Cormier, who was also named to the team. stars as shortstop.

“I loved being part of the Fisher Cats too, with all the first moments of the team (victory, championship, etc.) and all the new fans it brought,” emphasizes Cormier

He fully supports the name change.

“I think the reaction has been very positive, especially from older fans who have watched the Mets play for a long time. Several young players on the team were also Mets fans growing up. In short, I look forward to celebrating the return to the roots of baseball in Greater Moncton with this name change.”
