The new coach of the Panama basketball team, Gonzalo García, is expected this Thursday to carry out comprehensive work and begin the preparation of the national quintet for its first challenge, the qualifier for the Fiba Américas 2025 tournament, which begins in the month of February this year.

García already has a list of players for his first commitment at the head of the national quintet, it is a FIBA date, but the procedures must be carried out to know which ones can be counted on, because many play abroad, explained the president of the Panamanian Basketball Federation (Fepaba), Abdiel Blanco.

The leader maintained that there are players in Asian basketball, such as Akil Mitchel, Javier Carter and Tony Bishop.

To this we must add that we will also work with a base of local players.

Panama in the Fiba America qualifiers are seeded in Group B alongside Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay

The Panamanian quintet will play its first away window against Uruguay on February 23 and then host the same rival at home three days later.

According to the president of Fepaba, among the plans or projects that García has is to take a tour of the different provinces and the first could be Darién or Chiriquí, after arriving in Panama.

These visits could take place after two weeks of being in Panama, Blanco explained and added that what is also sought is for the teams in the different categories to have the same style of play.

Likewise, the project is to regulate the different basketball schools, which register as a school in the federation.

Argentine García’s contract is for one year, extendable for another year.

Panama had its first international commitment in the Blanco era, which was the last Pan American Games in Santiago 2023 in Chile, a tournament that served as “learning for everyone,” said Blanco.
