Good year! The first major horror film of 2024 is fast approaching with Night Swim, produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse. The film follows a baseball player and his family who move into a new home after being forced to retire due to a debilitating illness. Unfortunately, due to its mysterious past, the number of deaths and tragedies associated with the pool have made the pool and house haunted.
Bryce McGuire directs from his viral 2014 short film, and Night Swim stars Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49) and Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin). During MovieWeb’s interviews for the film in late December, we asked everyone about their favorite films of the year. McGuire was immediate:
“I just saw Godzilla Minus One. I really loved it. There is such a good character story there. [The main character] can’t forgive himself. He’s trying to start this family, or he doesn’t want to give himself this happiness. But also, the monster kicks ass. The sound design is incredible. I love a movie like this […] It’s scary, it’s rock’n’roll, it’s great creatures, great design. So that’s the one that really stood out to me. I also thought Poor Things was great. M3GAN, of course, early last year, in the same niche that we’re going to be in, it was so much fun and we had such a cultural moment […] Our editor Jeff McEvoy also cut M3GAN. So yes, I feel connected to the success of this film. »
Kerry Condon and Wyatt Russell are hilarious co-stars
Our full interview with Russell and Condon is a lot of fun, and they’re right when they say they argue like an old married couple, but with a lot more humor and grace. Watching them discuss their favorite films of 2023 was a highlight, especially when it came to Russell. Here’s what they said:
“2023 has been a very long year now,” Kerry Condon said. “But off the top of my head, I’m going to say EO. It was the foreign language film of last year. It was incredible. And it’s not a foreign language, because it’s all about a donkey. There’s not much in it, which is why it’s so beautiful. It’s a bit through the eyes of an animal.
“My problem is I have a three-year-old,” Wyatt Russell said. “I love Mickey’s Funhouse and Blippi, who is actually the biggest star on planet Earth. But my wife and I, it looks terrible, but it’s so hard to go out to see a movie. »
“Come on, Wyatt, pick one!” » exclaimed Condon.
“I’m trying to think about fucking one I saw.” Wish has just been released. »
“Yeah, did you see that?” » Condon asked enthusiastically.
“I saw the trailer… The last movie I saw in the theater was Triangle of Sadness, and I thought it was the best movie. »
“Oh yeah, that’s a good question,” Condon admitted.
