Professional Football Player Dapo Mebude in Critical Condition After Car Crash

Dapo Mebude (22), a professional football player from KV Oostende, crashed his car into a tree on Sunday morning. The Scot is in mortal danger. “The circumstances are being investigated,” the federal police said.

The accident took place on Sunday morning shortly before 9 am on the E40 exit in Loppem, in the direction of Brussels. Mebude, a Scottish professional footballer for second division club KV Oostende, left the road and crashed into a tree.

The young man had to be freed by the fire brigade and was taken to the AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges, where he was urgently operated on. According to the federal police, the player’s condition is critical. A delegation from KV Oostende is also on site at the hospital to monitor his situation. Later that evening the news came that the operation was successful.

“Dapo Mebude underwent successful surgery at the AZ Sint-Jan Brugge after his accident,” the club confirms to our editors. “We will normally get more information about his situation on Monday. We thank the hospital’s medical staff for the good care, think of Dapo and his family and wish them a lot of strength and recovery in these difficult times,” it said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, the prosecutor’s office said. “It is not clear how the accident could have happened,” the federal highway police said. “The public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the precise circumstances of the accident.” The necessary observations were made and the exit was reopened shortly before 3 p.m.

“Our thoughts are with Dapo and his family”

At the time of the accident, the players of KV Oostende were on their way to a practice match in Knokke, which was to kick off at 11 am. Several of Mebude’s teammates witnessed the accident from some distance. “There is no further news about his situation yet,” KV Oostende said. The practice match against FC Knokke has already been cancelled.

Mebude is a Brit with Nigerian roots. He played in the youth categories for the Scottish tradition club Glasgow Rangers, and was also a Scottish youth international. In the summer of 2021, he left for the English second division club FC Watford, which immediately loaned him to third division club AFC Wimbledon – where he was a permanent fixture in the selection. KVO took him over permanently from Watford in September 2022. Mebude is not a permanent fixture in the KVO team.
