Montreal, January 14, 2024 – A third of the under-18 (U18) national champion titles, i.e. 5, were won by Quebec judokas on Saturday at the Canadian Elite Championships held in Edmonton, Alberta. To this golden harvest is added 6 silver medals and 8 bronze medals. These results therefore allow Quebec to come first in the ranking of the provinces.
Female athletes at the helm of the Quebec ship
Several exceptional performances were achieved, starting with Valeria Kostrovets from the Métropolitain judo club who won the -48kg title. In the final she faced another Quebecer, Nikole-Daria Manaila from the Ippon judo club. Same scenario in -70 kg where this time, it was Charline Bourque from the Boucherville judo club who had the upper hand over her compatriot Missy-Jen Dorval-Mbele from the Métropolitain judo club.
In the -63kg category, it was Charlie Thibault who won the prestigious gold medal for the first time in the elite national championships. Confidence reigned among this athlete from the Seikidokan sports-studies program:
“Since I had already beaten most of the girls in other competitions before, I knew I could do it by doing my judo both standing and on the ground. »
– Charlie Thibault
The last Quebec gold medal on the women’s side was awarded to Mélody Grenier from Boucherville in -52kg, who did it again for a 2nd consecutive year by winning all her fights by ippon.
A first for the Fermont judo club
Jean-David Bouchard (+90kg) writes the history of the young Fermont judo club by winning a gold medal for the first time in the elite national championship. Perseverance was the key to achieving this feat:
“I finally managed to unlock certain elements that I was not able to do, by training more, by seeing what I had not succeeded in last year and by changing certain training…”
