Rafa Nadal’s Setback: A New Injury Forces Him to Skip Australian Open

What happens to Rafa Nadal? He had just returned to the tennis courts, in the Brisbane Tournament, and had also played almost at the highest levels, those of a year ago – before the injury that forced him to stop. In the last few days the Majorcan first beat Dominic Thiem and then beat the Australian Kubler in two sets.

Today the announcement that no one wanted and wasn’t waiting for: a new stop. The former world number one will not be on court at the Australian Open, the first Slam of the season. “A micro tear in a muscle,” Nadal writes in a post on Instagram, confirming the forfeit on the Melbourne courts. “Right now I’m not ready to compete at the highest level in best-of-5 sets matches. So I will return to Spain to see my doctor, get treatment and rest,” he concludes in the post.

Truly an unfortunate period for the former number one who hoped to return and battle not only Novak Djokovic but also the new recruits, from Alcaraz to Sinner.
