Ski jumping: Pinkelnig catapults to second place

After her recent win in Oberstdorf, Eva Pinkelnig also underlined her top form in Villach on Wednesday. The 35-year-old from Vorarlberg catapulted herself from eighth to second place in the second round and achieved her next podium finish. Only the Slovenian Nika Prevc jumped in a league of her own on the Carinthian normal hill.

Prevc laid the foundation for her third World Cup victory with 96.5 m in the first round, which she then secured with 92.0 m. In the end, the Slovenian had a whopping 26 point lead over Pinkelnig. The Vorarlberg native almost turned the result on its head compared to the first round with a set of 95.0 m. Canadian Abigail Straite came in third place, three points behind Pinkelnig.

Overall, the Austrians showed a strong team. With Julia Mühlbacher in fifth place and Lisa Eder in seventh place, two more ÖSV jumpers ended up in the top seven. Jacqueline Seifriedsberger in 15th place and Chiara Kreuzer in 25th place also scored World Cup points. Marita Kramer experienced a black day. The Salzburg woman missed the decision of the best 30 after a jump of 82.0 m. Katharina Ellmauer was also just a spectator in the second round. On Thursday (countdown from 12.15 p.m. on ORF1) there will be the chance for revenge in the Villach Alpenarena.

Nika Prevc (SLO) wins in Villach

The Slovenian jumped in a league of her own in the first competition.

Peeing is playing it safe

After her knee injury, it was only Pinkelnig’s third jump after her comeback; in the qualification she even landed at 96 meters. “There was a bit of fear in the first round. The qualifying jump was good, but I noticed that I didn’t quite fly at the bottom, and that crept in a bit. I had a bit of respect for that. Accordingly, I pulled back a little while crouching, was behind the ski, and then it didn’t fly well,” the 35-year-old explained her jump to 88 meters in an ORF interview.

First round from Pinkelnig

The Vorarlberg native pulled her mental handbrake on her first jump.

“In the second round I took my heart into my hands and just pushed through,” said the winner of the overall World Cup last season. “I am happy about second place. It’s super awesome, it’s my third competition, it’s so cool to start like this.”

Mühlbacher is happy about fifth place

Mühlbacher was equally happy with fifth place: “I’m very satisfied. After the lull in Oberstdorf, I couldn’t have wished for a better result today.” With Eder, a third Austrian was in the top ten. “After qualifying, I thought to myself that it was no longer my hill. But thank God I was able to improve well and achieved seventh place. I am very satisfied with that.”

Mühlbacher ends up in the top five

Julia Mühlbacher achieved fifth place in Villach.

The Viennese Meghann Wadsak, who was nominated for the World Cup for the first time (“It was extremely exciting and super cool”) and local hero Hannah Wiegele, among others, did not make it into the main competition. The recently strong Norwegian Eirin Maria Kvandal and the weak German world champion Katharina Schmid did not even take part. Both prefer training to competitions in Carinthia.
