Sunday night at the Australian Open: Sinner serene, Sakkari continues, Berrettini withdraws

Sinner starts slowly

Jannik Sinner had the honor of starting the tournament on the Rod Laver Arena. If the lack of competition was felt (he did not play an official tournament before this Australian Open), the Italian nevertheless did the job without trembling against Botic Van de Zandschulp (59th). After a controlled first set, the world No. 4 experienced less success, but he managed to complete this first official match of the season in three sets (6-4, 7-5, 6-4).

Sakkari on its way

In the women’s table, no surprises. Leylah Fernandez (36th) logically won against Sara Bejlek (134th) after a first warm-up set (7-6 [5], 6-2). Easy also for Maria Sakkari (8th) who remains on the momentum of her three victories at the United Cup and continues a fourth success by dominating Nao Hibino (92nd, 6-4, 6-1). Barbora Krejcikova (10th) dropped a set against Mai Hontama (122nd) but she is well there in the second round (2-6, 6-4, 6-3).

Flat rate caps

Hard blow for Matteo Berrettini. Down to 125th in the world, the Italian will not begin his rise in the ranking thanks to a good result at the Australian Open. Victim of an injury to his right foot, he gave up playing in the tournament. He is replaced in the table by Zizou Bergs.
