The match between Wolfsburg and Cologne was barely fifteen minutes into the match when Cologne player Max Finkgräfe tried to clear the ball. He hit the ball really hard, but also mowed down line judge Thorben Siewer.
He went down immediately and was treated along the line for several minutes. The line judge was dizzy and was replaced by 4th referee Nicolas Winter.
Problem: a new 4th ref was also needed and he was found in the audience. 32-year-old Tobias Krull, himself a goalkeeper in the German 6th division, volunteered to take a break.
Krull exchanged his jeans and sweater for a black tracksuit and accompanied the referees along the line. The unfortunate Siewer was taken to hospital for observation.
