Gambia will face defending champions Senegal, Guinea and Cameroon in the regular part of the tournament from January 15 to 23.
James Gomez will thus miss the start of training with Sparta, at least the friendly match with Copenhagen and the start of the training camp in Marbella.
The Gambian representative came to Letná last summer from Horsens, Denmark. He appeared in the starting line-up in the league in Jablonec and at home against Karviná, but the opponent did not test him in any of the matches. In view of the personnel shortage, he also started in the base at the end of October in Mladá Boleslav. The game did not go well for him there at all, and Sparta scored its only defeat in the autumn league.

“Gomez is obviously having a hard time, he lacks game experience. And if so, for a B, which makes a difference. It was known in Boleslav. All the more so because the match didn’t work out for Filip Panák,” ex-Spartan player Václav Kadlec pointed out in the Přímák show on Sport.cz.
“As the two stoppers Krejčí and Vitík dropped out, there was a lack of coordination in the defense with Gomez,” confirmed international Martin Frýdek.
“Gomez showed that he is not yet ready for the starting line-up,” former Gunner Horst Siegl also assessed.

In the following week, Gomez played the entire cup match against Bohemians and helped Ďolíček turn around 2:1 and advance to the quarterfinals. In Glasgow, however, his rudeness marked the 1:2 defeat at Rangers in the Europa League. He has not appeared in the Czech competition since then.
The African stopper now needs to fight for a place in the team, however, leaving for the African championship complicates his situation. Should The Gambia make a sensational run to the final medal fights on February 10 and 11, Gomez would also miss the opening spring league match in Karvina.
