The national handball team does not plan to change its coach after failing at the European Championship / Article

The handball players returned home on Monday after the loss in Luxembourg, which ended their hopes of reaching the European Championship qualification round. Earlier, a seven-goal victory at home was not enough, as an eight-goal loss away from home prevented a two-game winning streak.

In Latvian handball, the failure of the national team to qualify for the European Championship is evaluated

National team goalkeeper Edgars Kukša was disappointed after the game in Luxembourg, but he emphasized that the painful stage must be over.

“Unfortunately, the experience was lacking at the end, the experience to throw the ball into the goal with great confidence in decisive moments,” Kukša said about the game in Luxembourg. “It’s painful, all the young guys are going through it, it’s also very painful for me, but it’s not the last game in my career, life goes on and there will be important games to come.”

After such significant failures, the question of the position of the team’s head coach always becomes relevant. Davors Čutura took over the corner of the Latvian national team in the summer of 2022, continuing the generational change in the national team.

The general secretary of the LHF, Līga Bīriņa, stated in a conversation with Latvijas Radio that for now she sees no reason to change the coach, as professional work has begun in the national team, and the goal of the federation is to work in the long term.

“We are not interested in pulling something off and radically changing it after one loss. Right now the tools are good and for my part I will definitely vote for it to continue working and not change [treneri]but the board of the Latvian Handball Federation will also judge,” said Bīriņa.

Anatolijs Kreipāns, a handball expert and one of the most experienced Latvian sports commentators, hopes that the fiasco of the national team will serve as a wake-up call for the entire family of the sport, forcing them to reconsider their attitude. Kreipāns emphasized that raising the level of Latvian handball in the national super league requires at least four strong teams that would fight for the title, because a strong national team cannot arise from nothing.

In 2024, official matches are no longer expected for the handball national team, but there will be an opportunity to hold training camps and test matches, as the very young team gathers international game experience.
