Fangio, who is 65 years old, became the highest paid defensive coordinator for the NFL’s Dolphins in the previous year. It took some time for his defensive strategy to be fully understood, but during Weeks 8 to 18, Miami had the seventh best defensive expected points added in the league. This also happened to be around the same time that All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey returned.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel expressed gratitude towards Vic for his contributions during the 2023 season in a statement. After evaluating the season, it was clear that this was the most beneficial course of action for everyone involved.
Towards the end of the season, the Dolphins faced challenges with injuries. They were missing key players such as Jevon Holland, Xavien Howard, Jerome Baker, Jaelan Phillips, and Bradley Chubb in their AFC wild-card defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, their important backup Andrew Van Ginkel was also unavailable.
In the 2022 season, Miami ranked 10th in terms of yards allowed per game, a decrease from their 18th place finish the year before. Additionally, Fangio’s defense was third in the league for sacks with a total of 56. Despite this success, the Dolphins struggled in their last six games, giving up over 400 yards in four of them and ultimately losing all four.
Sources informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler that Fangio has emerged as the primary candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles’ open defensive coordinator role, and an agreement is likely.

Anthony Campanile, the current linebackers coach for the Dolphins, is being considered as a potential replacement for Fangio. He recently interviewed for the open defensive coordinator position with the New York Giants. Another potential option is former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley.
Fangio, the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, was named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018. He brings 37 years of experience coaching in the NFL.
