But his ex-advisor Ademola Okulaja, a former national player, is to blame – Schröder told “Yahoo Sports”. Okulaja advised him not to sign the contract. Apparently Schröder’s side believed they were getting an even better offer.

Schröder: “I would have signed it.”

And further: “I would never just leave money on the table. My mother didn’t raise me like that.”

Two years ago, Schröder denied it: “There was no contract, I didn’t turn anything down. It’s not true!” Journalists had only calculated the sum, he also said.

Instead of pocketing $84 million, Schröder later had to sign an annual contract for just $5.8 million with the Boston Celtics. A year later, the Lakers only paid $2.6 million for the point guard.

“They were the two worst years of my career. But in those two years I made $8 million,” Schröder said.

He also explained: “I have two healthy children, my mother and my siblings are doing well. I can buy anything I want. I previously had a contract for $70 million. A guy from Germany? From Braunschweig? I am beyond blessed. I am with the people who love me and have been there for me in the darkest days.”

In his hometown of Braunschweig he is the main shareholder of the Basketball Lions.

Schröder has now arrived in a different league in terms of salary. This season he signed a two-year, $25.4 million contract with the Toronto Raptors.
