The rollercoaster ride of Darvin Ham’s coaching journey with the Los Angeles Lakers

He is one of the names of the moment in the NBA. Darvin Ham, coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, seemed to be on a cloud when the Californians won the first NBA Cup in history. However, a month later the situation has undergone a 180-degree turn based on defeats; so much so that his position is in question.

According to a report from The Athletic, accumulating lost games has caused the morale of the players to logically decline, but beyond that, a disconnection between coach and squad has been growing as a result of the many changes that are being carried out in the starting quintet and, therefore, in the rotation. Questioned about this, Ham assures that he does not feel pressure to lose his job and that he is perfectly aligned with the owner, Jeanie Buss, and the vice president of basketball operations and general manager, Rob Pelinka.

«I’m not training to save my job. I feel like I’m coaching an incredible franchise and those situations are inherent to coaching in this business. I have seen many coaches come and go, some good and some who have a bad context around them. But in no way do I feel that way,” he clarified in statements to Khobi Prince of Orange County Register before the 106-103 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Ham feels secure in his position and his counterpart on the bench, Tyronn Lue, believes that they have been really unfair to him, since throughout an 82-game campaign there are many streaks.

«It’s a long season. Many things happen throughout the season and many things change. We said the same thing last year when they went 2-10 and made the conference finals. Are you giving the coach all the credit he deserves for that? It doesn’t seem like it to me. I think D-Ham did a great job last year of doing that. And the same this year. They suffered a lot of injuries, a lot of different rotations, a lot of lineups… It’s difficult,” he said in statements collected by Andrew Greif from Los Angeles Times.
